Metatarsalgia

What is Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia refers to pain in the sole of the foot (ball of the foot) over the heads of the metatarsal bones.

Causes of Metatarsalgia

Causes of metatarsalgia can include splayfoot or flat feet. Women are more frequently affected than men. The reason for this is wearing high-heeled shoes. Obesity and heavy strain are additional risk factors.

Surgical Treatment for Metatarsalgia

Insoles aim to redistribute pressure and can provide relief. If this is not sufficient, surgery must be considered. The affected bone is surgically shortened by a few millimeters to reduce pressure on the sole of the foot.

Aftercare for Metatarsalgia

During the first 2 weeks after the operation, careful wound and swelling care is provided, after which the sutures are removed. For 6 weeks, you will wear a forefoot relief shoe, which allows you to walk freely. Physiotherapy and lymphatic drainage will then enable you to regain your full mobility as quickly as possible.
