Do You Have Ankle Pain?
What could be the Cause of your Ankle Pain?
A common cause of ankle pain is cartilage damage caused by subluxation trauma, i.e. “tilting” of the ankle. This leads to damage to the cartilage on the edges of the ankle bone. This damage is caused by trauma.
Furthermore, cartilage damage can be caused by wear and tear.
A special form is OCD- osteochondrosis dissecans, which has a staged course and can occur spontaneously, among other things. This involves a gradual dying off of the cartilage tissue due to undersupply and/or overload.
Prognosis for Cartilage Damage to the Ankle
If there is damage to the cartilage, it has a very poor tendency to heal spontaneously, which usually causes the damage to increase over time and the ankle pain to increase. Isolated cartilage damage can increase, gradually leading to the development of osteoarthritis.
Diagnosis of Cartilage Damage to the Ankle
The diagnosis is primarily clinical (ankle pain) and native radiological (X-ray). Magnetic resonance imaging is essential.
Where Can Cartilage Damage Occur?
Common locations of isolated cartilage damage are:
- Knee joint and kneecap
- Ankle
- Hip joint
- Shoulder joint
- Wrist joint
- Elbow joint
How is Cartilage Damage Treated?
Cartilage damage can be treated conservatively with hyaluronic acid injection treatments and relieving measures. In special cases, we treat with infusion therapy.
There are several surgical options. Depending on the defect, condition and location, a decision must be made as to which procedure is suitable.
