Pain-Minimizing Knee Arthroscopy – Non-Touch Technique with Intraoperative Local Therapy and Brief Anesthesia, Compression, and Cryotherapy

Knee joint arthroscopy is one of the most common orthopedic and trauma surgery procedures, e.g., after an injury to a meniscus, cartilage, removal of synovial folds, or a loose body.

Despite the advancements in surgery in recent years towards purely arthroscopic minimally invasive treatment, there is an advanced therapeutic method:

  1. Anesthetic Method with an Extremely Short-Acting Anesthetic (Ultiva®)

In contrast to conventional anesthesia, patients treated with it are wide awake immediately after the procedure. The postoperative side effects of anesthesia are comparatively much less severe (“Opiate-Hangover”), and patients recover much faster postoperatively!

Therefore, this procedure is extremely well suited for outpatient surgeries that require general anesthesia!

  1. NON-TOUCH TECHNIQUE:

With specially thin and multi-angled instruments, minimally invasive surgery can be performed even in very small or narrow knee joints, ensuring that the cartilage surface is not affected in any way! This prevents pressure damage to the cartilage, which may only manifest as cartilage damage days or weeks after an arthroscopy!

The range of instruments that Dr. Mark Schurz uses in the operating room is so equipped that any damage in the knee joint can be optimally repaired, even without extensive manipulation of the joint.

  1. Once the arthroscopy is completed, a special medicinal formulation is introduced into the joint after closing the two small skin incisions:
  • Special Hyaluronic Acid for Arthroscopic Procedures
  • Local Anesthetic with Hemostatic Substance (Epinephrine)
  • Long-acting local anesthetic, which on the one hand fills the knee joint from the inside, and on the other hand also numbs the puncture sites afterwards.
  • Anti-inflammatory Preparation
  1. Immediately after the procedure, a special dressing arrangement (recess compression bandage) is applied, which prevents swelling.
  2. Immediately in the recovery room, cryotherapy of the joint is started.

For this, Dr. Mark Schurz, Knee Specialist Vienna, uses the “Game Ready 2.1” system, which generates continuous cooling with simultaneous compression/lymphatic drainage.

The device should be used 4-6 times daily for 30 minutes each for the first week after surgery to achieve optimal results.

With this therapeutic procedure performed by Dr. Mark Schurz, no or only minimal postoperative pain is to be expected!! Joint drainage is not required, nor is the use of a tourniquet during surgery!

Patients can leave the clinic independently and pain-free/with minimal pain a few hours after the procedure, following a short observation period after such a minimally invasive treatment!

After knee arthroscopy, the intake of painkillers is hardly necessary!
