An increase in intra-articular pressure causes the knee capsule to bulge into the popliteal fossa, forming a cyst. This typically occurs in the <strong>inner posterior region of the knee joint.<\/strong> There are two bursae located there, into which the cyst can grow.<\/p>\n<h2>Causes of a Baker&#8217;s Cyst<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Cartilage damage\/Osteoarthritis<\/li>\n<li>Meniscus damage<\/li>\n<li>Knee joint instability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This leads to an inflammatory reaction in the joint. The inflammatory reaction of the joint causes an overproduction of synovial fluid.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms of a Baker&#8217;s Cyst<\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the size of the cyst, there may be a <strong>feeling of pressure in the popliteal fossa<\/strong>. This can lead to restrictions and pain when bending and extending the knee joint.<\/p>\n<h2>Diagnosis of Knee Baker&#8217;s Cyst<\/h2>\n<p>A <strong>manual examination of the knee joint<\/strong> and the presenting symptoms are crucial for diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>As a further diagnostic measure, an <strong>ultrasound<\/strong> and\/or a <strong>magnetic resonance imaging<\/strong> is advisable (MRI).<\/p>\n<p>In the case of a Baker&#8217;s cyst, an MRI is the <strong>best diagnostic method<\/strong>. It can particularly clarify the underlying causes of the cyst (meniscus damage, cartilage damage, osteoarthritis).<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment of Baker&#8217;s Cyst<\/h2>\n<p>Conservative measures include <strong>rest<\/strong>, <strong>anti-inflammatory measures<\/strong> and <strong>anti-inflammatory medication<\/strong>, as well as <strong>elastic compression bandages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>initial stage<\/strong>, I attempt to<strong> gently massage the Baker&#8217;s cyst<\/strong> to remove fluid from the popliteal fossa.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>temporary relief<\/strong>, I perform an ultrasound-guided puncture of the cyst with local anesthesia and <strong>aspirate the fluid<\/strong>. Simultaneously, I inject a cortisone preparation into the cyst to promote its &#8220;adhesion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If the cyst has reached a very <strong>voluminous size<\/strong>, it can be <strong>surgically removed<\/strong>.
